Dog grooming is a fantastic way to make money from home at your own speed. As businesses go the initial outlay is very modest to get started. Did you know that the price owners pay to have a small dog groomed (here in Auckland) generally starts at $55.00. Imagine working from home, earning money whilst doing something enjoyable and working from a diary so you choose your days off.

Owners wanting to learn to groom their own pets gave me these compelling reasons for wishing to learn dog grooming:-

FINANCIAL &/OR STYLE DRIVEN
You may want to learn the basics to turn your dog into a chic pet about town or you may be wanting to save money instead of outsourcing your pet’s grooming.

Grooming should be done approximately every 6 weeks depending on breed and/or seasonal hair growth – this can result in huge expense.

When a dog is taken for a groom at longer intervals this too can result in additional expense because the groomer often needs to take longer and some services deem it necessary in such instances to provide two people to work on an unkempt animal and charge accordingly.

COMFORT
Your dog may feel happiest and not stressed when it is in it's own home environment.

MY 'PEDIGREE' & WHAT MAKES A GOOD DOG GROOMER

After receiving training from a matriarch of the dog industry who was an expert groomer, I launched myself into the World of grooming. At that time I was very naive and didn't know what was in store for me. Learning was the easy bit ... then came real life as a groomer. I had to learn how to save money whilst successfully marketing my business, how to set up a grooming room, how to encourage worthwhile customers and politely discourage others, how to keep books of account and the list went on. Eventually I gathered a wealth of experience which I now pass to students.

I guarantee if you are as goofy about dogs and grooming as I am, from the first dog you groom to the last you will never stop being excited. This is something I could never say when I worked behind a desk.

It is really satisfying to groom a dog beautifully and (from first time customers) to hear the phrase "Is that my dog?"

WHAT MAKES A GOOD DOG GROOMER

A rapport with your clients and their dogs is very important. From the perspective of an animal lover it is important to be able to show the dog you are in charge - I can give you tips on how to do this successfully.

The actual grooming is a matter of EYE TO HAND CO-ORDINATION. Once you have cut a pattern into the coat you need to be able to follow through with an appreciation of what a really good haircut should look like and I can help you with this.

GROOMERS ASSOCIATION(s)Just a thought ... for those of you out there who wonder about the merits of being a Member of a Groomer's Association versus not joining an Association. Sadly at the moment in this country there is no organisation charged with the responsibility of allowing only qualified groomers into the marketplace. Effectively, this means anyone who owns a pair of dog clippers can start up a grooming business. In NZ there is an Association whose mission statement is that their judging process serves dogs well by ensuring only groomers they deem as being capable of technically correct grooms will receive their endorsement and a certificate is issued to this end.My own experience of the marketplace is such that I too am extremely keen to see technically correct grooms to a high standard administered and thus train accordingly. However, without a body yet regulating the industry I would suggest something more worthwhile than placing any certificate in your workshop (simply in my opinion) is the use of Before and After photographs of your handiwork. This is what your clients will seek out be that on your workroom walls, on your website or into your TradeMe Gallery and then of course there is the power of your handiwork being walked to be admired and attract clients.

My service is basic 101 grooming aimed at educating you, the dog owner OR those of you wishing to become dog groomers in the basics of breed specific grooming, to empower you to be confident in handling your dog, operating equipment, understanding how to groom each section of a dog’s body and dispelling any mystery attached to the art of dog grooming in a relaxed environment. I do not teach show standards, nor do I teach hand stripping.

From owners who just want their dog to be practically groomed to those of you who want to unleash your creativity on your pet, I can show you the style techniques for pom poms, skirts, beards, sharp eyebrows and cute tails.

All dogs from pedigrees to cross bred dogs can be groomed to look like stars.

All students given notes relevant to trusted suppliers and a schedule of equipment required as well as tips when making future purchases.

All students: Talk about blades, sizing, care of. (Your notes will contain blade kit sizing – owners will receive specific blade notes relating to just those blades required to groom their own pet)

All students: Talk about how to prepare dog including ways to de-mat.

Students Learning for Profit only - Business Logistics, book-keeping & Marketing tips. Notes are also provided relevant to your IRD obligations and forms. If we are running later than intended I will verbally summarize some key points and hand you notes to take with you. The notes are so fulsome and done in such a style that you can easily read these at home.

Students Learning for Profit – Info. on some of the more labour intensive breeds you might encounter during your work, overview of hand stripping, Blade kit outline for grooming, & re-cap on what to do for emergency matting

Owners Learning for Pleasure will be taught theory in the morning & the afternoon session will be training in practical scissoring and clipping including fluffing process, ear plucking and nail clipping.

If you have not been handed instructions on the specific groom taught during training then instructions will be emailed to you, along with a courtesy email and hot tips from past students, Theory Test (Owners), pdf of leg shaping and before and after images of the dog you groom on the day (if available), and pdf of head grooming (where appropriate).

STUDENTS LEARNING TO GROOM FOR PROFIT

Will be sent courtesy email, Theory Test (groomers), along with hot tips from past students, pdf(s) of leg and tail shaping and before and after images of the dog you groom on the day (if available) and pdf of head grooming (where appropriate); and indemnity for your workshop wall to be completed.

KIT
The kit I advise students to buy is suitable for delivering top notch grooms without being over-stocked with superfluous items. As you can read below in "Tools" I only supply small tools to owners learning to groom - I do not sell to my student clients grooming for profit who I advise where to buy tools so that they can sell such petware to their own customers. I guide you independently on where to make economic kit purchases but I do not take commission(s).

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY DOG'S HAIR GROWTH DURING WINTER, IS IT KINDER TO WAIT UNTIL SUMMER UNTIL I GROOM MY DOG?
Dog coat growth slows down in the cooler months. Grooming still needs to take place but simply 3 to 4 weeks need to be added to the prescribed grooming rotation. Don't be tempted to leave a dog's coat unmanaged because even the most robust dog clippers will then need to work too hard which can result in clipper whine and the need to have clippers serviced.

If you are flying into Auckland Domestic Airport you have a real surprise about how incredibly easy it is to reach our location. The cost is $30.00 for a Return Ticket OR $19.00 for a single ticket - those tickets must be requested from the bus driver. Firstly, you jump onto the extremely frequent Airporter Bus, take an approx. 45 minute trip into Auckland Britomart Bus Station. From Britomart jump onto another extremely frequent Flier / Express bus going to the modern Constellation Park n Ride Bus Station (takes approx. 20 minutes) where I will pick you up FREE of charge. When the training is finished repeat this process and I will drop you off at the Park n Ride again for FREE so that you can pick up the bus back to Britomart and then you will need to get the Airbus back to the airport. IMPORTANT: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT WHERE A TRAINING SESSION RUNS OVER TIME STUDENTS WILL BE CHARGED AT THE ONE ON ONE TUITION RATE OF $30 PER HOUR. ADDITIONAL TUITION

SUBSEQUENT LESSONS - if required - One on One Tuition Rate $30.00 per hour. The nature of subsequent lessons is generally practical & hands-on where students feel they want to focus on an aspect of grooming and/or a specific breed's styling. (This is student and trainer grooming a dog together).

OR

Students can now save money by simply observing and making notes during "CLINICS" students pay by the hour at a rate of $15.00 per hour to observe a nose to toes groom in progress & make notes if they wish (this is trainer only grooming dog) . If a student desires they can take part in the wash / dry / fluffing process. Otherwise this is quite different to one on one tuition where students groom hands-on.

When Two People Want to Learn Together (2 Part Days Training)

Cost $850.00 2 Students together (hireage on top)

I am able presently to train two people simultaneously. The payment is $850.00 for 2 students together and hireage is on top. Both students need to be able to allow their partner to take on board information without dominating - we all learn at different speeds. I have discovered for example Mother and adult daughter training days work well.

STUDENTS COMING FROM OUTSIDE OF AUCKLAND

PAYMENT & RECEIPT(S)
I accept cash, cheque or internet banked payment(s). The course fee is paid in full ahead of course commencement at which time confirmation is given of your booked training dates. Until payment is received training date(s) are not confirmed.

Receipts will be issued for cleared funds.

REFUND / CANCELLATION
Refund in full given (where cancellation/or postponement takes place) except when cancellation/ or postponement takes place 7 days or less from the commencement date of training, then NO refund will be given.

DISCLAIMER
Mrs Rook ("the trainer") reserves the right without question to decline to provide training for any student at her discretion entirely. This will not impact financially adversely on any student once payment is received unless a student cancels or postpones training 7 days or less from the commencement date of training (see previous paragraph).

HOUSE RULES & BEFORE YOU START

I provide dog models but in the case of an owner wishing to bring their own dog I have to insist on the following.

I operate this service for owners of well behaved dogs only. Owners need to have the ability to, within reason, control their dog while it sits being pampered. Barkers and aggressive dogs need not apply.

Allowance is made for dogs to get used to their surrounds and being worked on. Micro breaks and treats are given to reassure dogs and if a dog is young or old this is taken into consideration.

Please only bring a clean brushed, de-matted dog to training.

I suggest washing and thoroughly combing / de-matting your dog the day before training.

I reserve the right to retain 75% of paid student training funds where a lesson has to be abandoned because a dog cannot sit still or be controlled.

I would suggest to anyone who has reservations about their dog’s ability to sit during a training session – start practising doing this at home, brush your dog and touch it’s paws and ears giving rewards for good behaviour. This can take time and a lot of patience. TAKE HEART - I have known a soft coated wheaten, an abject fidget, who wouldn’t hesitate to nip when groomed who became a grooming star who easily tolerated being handled.

WHAT TO BRING & EQUIPMENT HIREAGE (DURING LESSON)

Please liaise with me as to equipment you will need to bring with you to training.

If you have no equipment presently you can take advantage of my course tips to locate a trustworthy and cost effective supplier.

Scissor & Clipper Hire
If required I can hire a set of clippers including blades, curved and straight scissors to you during lesson time. Hire equipment does not leave my premises. I charge an additional $10.00 on top of my hourly rate for this equipment hire, payable on top of the initial course fee, at the time of training.

CLOTHING

Please wear items of clothing which are suitable. A PVC type apron is recommended or you might like to wear say a raincoat with sleeves rolled back to protect your clothing. Long hair will need to be back off your face. Closed, non-slip shoes. Gloves are not a requirement.

FREE GROOMS - DOG MODELS WANTED & GALLERY

FREE GROOMS
From time to time we require additional Dog Models. Your dog could be eligible for a FREE groom if you own a small groomable breed of dog with a good temperament. Such grooms are performed by beginner students in tandem with and overseen by tutor. DOG MODELS ARE REQUIRED TO BE WASHED & DE-MATTED THE DAY BEFORE THEY ARE GROOMED DURING TRAINING. MODEL DOGS WILL BE TOILETED, GIVEN WATER, DUVETS AND KINDNESS.

Your Dog Must Be Cleaned NO LATER THAN THE DAY IMMEDIATELY BEFORE TRAINING.

WHEN YOU ARE UNABLE OR DON'T WANT TO WASH YOUR DOG BEFORE TRAINING commences please bring your dog a little early on the training date for me to give your pet a luxury wash for which I will charge you $20.00. You will need to de-mat your dog before bringing it to me for washing on the training date.

In order to see if your dog is suitable in terms of temperament for our use during training I would be delighted to meet you and your pet for a Meet and Greet which takes approximately 15 minutes. This benefits you as owners as it enables you to meet Ann, ask questions and see how the Centre operates.

The Centre operates weekdays and Saturdays.

Dogs who are matted and/or not regularly brushed and combed need not apply.

As training is our primary service it is preferable from our point of view to be able to match your dog within it's grooming rotation to a student. If however we have no student to match your dog to you might like to take advantage of our low cost grooms. If you would like your dog to go onto our model waiting list please contact us today. This is not a clever scheme to boost our customer base - having dog models for students is very valuable to this business and it is your choice as to if you ever use us for a paid for groom.

DOG GROOMING SERVICE / PETWARE SUPPLIES / DOG CHARITY

If you have a small dog with a good temperament you are welcome to use our grooming service. This is done by Ann to a high standard. You can expect a surprisingly, reasonably priced groom by a dog lover who grooms only a select number of small dogs in a nice atmosphere (for most breeds of small dog the charge is $45.00).

Please make sure your dog is brushed and combed before arrival. This service is for patrons with well cared for dogs who understand the need to have their pet groomed on a realistic rotation for their dog's hair growth. We do NOT cater for heavily matted animals. Dog Protection Society Inc., Albany pours love and hard work into the care of unwanted dogs. Dogs who go to the Society are not euthanized after a certain time. The dogs are cared for indefinitely or until a suitable home is found. Please, please visit the Society's website (dogfriends.org.nz/dog-protection-society-contact-us.html), maybe you could volunteer to play with the dogs, maybe you could give a dog a home. Volunteers are wonderful to help socialise the dogs and stop them from being bored / lonely.

A postscript is that our home was so quiet without Milly ... we are now enchanted by our new wolf pack member Weety with whom we practice (The Dog Listener) Jan Fennell's Amichien Bonding which we highly recommend when anyone welcomes a new dog to their home.
